Meta withdraws Instagram AI remix feature after backlash over default opt-in

Last week, Meta released its most advanced image and video generation tool to date—the Muse Image model. As part of the release, Meta also announced a new feature allowing Instagram users to incorporate other users' public content into AI creations by mentioning relevant accounts with @ during the creation process.
More notably, Meta stated that the feature was enabled by default for all accounts, and users who wanted to prevent others from reusing their posts had to actively opt out of AI remixing.
Unsurprisingly, many Instagram users were unhappy with this, and the potential for misuse of the feature seemed to far outweigh its positive uses. According to Variety, several talent agencies immediately expressed concerns that the feature could facilitate identity theft and abuse, and advised their clients to opt out.
Meta apparently received the feedback and announced the withdrawal of the feature two days later.
Meta said: "Earlier this week, we announced that users could generate Meta AI images by mentioning public Instagram accounts with @. Our intention was to provide a useful creative tool and give users control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We have heard the feedback that the feature did not meet expectations, so we have now discontinued it."
Meta's swift removal of the option is a positive sign that the company is listening to outside voices. However, the fact that the feature was initially enabled by default raises serious questions about Meta's innovation-driven strategy.
Meta has always been committed to pushing boundaries. In fact, Facebook's original internal motto was "Move fast and break things," a strategy that later sparked numerous concerns about data privacy, harm to children, social media addiction, and the use of social media as a political tool.
Overall, despite the connective value of social media, it is difficult to argue that it has been entirely positive for society. However, if platforms including Meta had adopted a more responsible approach earlier, many negative effects could have been mitigated. But due to the early lack of awareness of the potential harms of social media, companies like Meta kept pushing forward to attract and retain users and compete for more advertising revenue.
Now, about two decades into the social media era, the potential harms of these platforms are better understood. Therefore, platforms should be able to apply appropriate safeguards before rolling out new tools at scale, including VR and AI. But clearly, Meta has no intention of self-regulating.
In fact, Meta has been working to build closer ties with the Trump administration, hoping to gain government support against regulations aimed at mitigating future harms. A key example is in Europe: the European Commission has continuously introduced restrictions on data usage and the evolution of social platform features. For instance, the European Commission forced Meta to delay rolling out its AI chatbot tool to EU users until the Commission assessed the impact. These regulations aim to better evaluate potential harms and protect EU users.
Due to regulatory measures, the EU has fined Meta over $1 billion annually for violations over the past three years. This is also why Meta wants to push back, while also seeking to expand its AI tools and other features to more users.
Meta views any regulatory delays or restrictions as obstacles to its business goals and thus as potential revenue limitations. But given Meta's willingness to launch potentially harmful AI tools with little regard for impact, the EU's approach clearly has its justification.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government is eager to support AI projects to ensure America leads in the AI race and has approved cutting red tape to advance new tools. But given such obvious missteps, can Meta really be trusted to manage the rollout of such systems?
For example, what happens when people become addicted to AI chatbots? How do AI interactions affect people's psychological states? And how does it affect society as a whole?
These major concerns seem to have been set aside in exchange for technological progress. This latest case once again shows Meta making an obvious and uninformed push forward without fully considering potential harms. A decade from now, when society looks back at this moment, it may question why more caution was not taken and why more such features were not prevented from going live.
