Instagram recently added a new feature to Reels that simplifies the creation process—First Draft. This feature allows users to quickly generate a preliminary Reels video from existing video clips, reducing the tedious steps of early editing.

Reels First Draft

According to Instagram's official explanation, First Draft automatically extracts highlights from multiple clips selected by the user and stitches them into a coherent video. In the announcement, the company said: "Just select your clips, tap once, and it will automatically trim pauses and tighten your clips, giving you a starting point you can continue editing in seconds."

Creators can then edit and customize the draft according to their needs, making it easier to kick off Reels projects. Instagram emphasized that all actions in First Draft are reversible: "Every step First Draft takes can be undone, and you can adjust or reorder anything before you continue. It handles the early video trimming, letting you focus less on technical production and get to the creative part faster."

Instagram said this feature will simplify the creation process by integrating key creative tools into the same interface. Combined with the expanding editing tools of Instagram's Edits video editing app—including improved project management and AI features—users now have multiple convenient ways to produce fun and engaging video clips.

For creators, the value of First Draft lies in its ability to automatically build a basic framework for Reels based on already-shot clips, reducing hesitation and time spent on repeated adjustments. Given that Reels viewing time accounts for about 50% of total Instagram usage, this feature could be significant because it makes it easier for users to seize key engagement opportunities within the app.

Users can access the First Draft feature through the Reels gallery or the Instagram camera interface.
