Meta has unveiled a new set of artificial intelligence-powered options for Facebook, designed to bring more advanced AI capabilities to its users. The announcement, made via Meta's official newsroom, outlines three primary areas of enhancement: AI search, creative editing tools, and AI-assisted wardrobe changes.

Upgraded AI Search: Tapping into User-Generated Insights

First, Meta aims to capitalize on the growing popularity of AI-driven discovery by introducing an upgraded AI search experience. The new search process is intended to incorporate deeper insights from across Facebook, leveraging the platform's extensive knowledge base built from user contributions.

As Meta explains: “From exploring your Feed to searching for something specific, AI Mode uses Meta AI to give you answers grounded in what people are saying publicly across our apps like in Groups and Reels, so you get real perspectives and experiences rather than a generic list of search results.”

This move is part of Meta's broader effort to better utilize its massive trove of user data. The company recently launched a new app called Forum, which is designed to help users find answers based on comments within Facebook groups.

Essentially, Meta is seeking to emulate the way people and AI chatbots use Reddit, where human-powered insights have made the platform a key source for AI discovery. Indeed, Reddit is now one of the most cited sources for AI chatbot answers. Meta believes its groups contain similar valuable insights and is now working to surface them to a wider audience.

Enhanced Photo and Video Editing Tools

Facebook users are also receiving new AI-powered photo and video editing tools, including improved transition and collage effects for camera roll sharing suggestions. These tools build on the camera roll suggestions Meta announced in April, which automatically scan images on a user's device and recommend content they might post to Facebook.

The new transition effects will enable users to create collage videos from photos, allowing them to showcase activities from the past month, for example. While these tools offer creative possibilities, they remain somewhat controversial, as Meta's AI digs into users' personal images to suggest posting options. Meta has reiterated that this feature is entirely opt-in.

AI Wardrobe Presets for Profile Pictures

Finally, Meta is rolling out new photo presets that make it easier to change clothing in an image using AI. “For sports fans, you can easily rep your fandom and virtually wear a team jersey to celebrate,” Meta stated. “Just tap on the Edit with AI icon in stories and select Wear It or go directly to your profile picture and tap Restyle profile picture with AI and select Wardrobe.”

Such image-altering tools have historically received a lukewarm response from users. Meanwhile, AI tools in general are facing a broader public backlash, as concerns grow about the true value of AI features.

Strategic Implications and Cost Pressures

Given this climate, it is somewhat surprising that Meta is choosing to promote even more AI at this stage. However, the company has invested hundreds of billions of dollars into AI development, and it needs to generate excitement about its AI future to justify that investment.

Yet even internally, Meta is now tempering its use of AI tools, with The Information reporting that overuse of AI is pushing up company costs. This creates a catch-22 for Meta: the company needs more people to use AI to demonstrate its value, but increased usage drives up the cost of providing these options.
