Instagram Reels Expands AI-Powered Translation to Five New Languages

Instagram has broadened its artificial intelligence-powered language translation capabilities for Reels, adding support for Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Italian. These new options complement the existing language set, allowing users to automatically translate Reels content into these languages with a single tap.

Meta, Instagram's parent company, has been progressively rolling out AI translation for Reels since last year. The underlying language models are designed to translate both audio and on-screen captions, and they also synchronize the creator's lip movements with the translated speech, creating a more natural viewing experience.

The translation process generates an audio track that mimics the creator's voice and mouth movements, making it appear as though the creator is speaking the translated language. Instagram has stated that this feature has helped creators reach a wider audience of interested viewers, breaking down language barriers.

Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri noted that the platform's AI translations for Reels now support 14 languages. However, in a separate press release, Meta indicated that the actual number is 18. The supported languages include several spoken in India, which is Instagram's largest user market, reflecting the platform's focus on global accessibility.

For creators, this expansion presents an opportunity to engage with a broader demographic. However, results may vary, and the AI lip-syncing can occasionally appear imperfect, even when the core message is conveyed accurately. Creators have the flexibility to review any translations before posting, disable the syncing feature, or opt out of translation entirely if they prefer.

Given the potential to tap into new audiences, it may be worthwhile for content creators to enable the translation option and gauge responses from non-native speakers. If engagement is strong in specific regions, this could open up their content to a fresh and previously untapped viewership.

Meta's auto-translation feature is available in the Reels composer for creators with more than 1,000 followers. Users can select up to two languages per translation, allowing for multi-language reach in a single post.

In addition to Instagram, Meta is also expanding translation support on Facebook, rolling out new languages including Bahasa, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Vietnamese, and Thai, with more languages expected to be added in the near future.
