AI Glasses Push Faces Growing Consumer Backlash Over Privacy and Wearability
Several big tech players are promoting AI-powered glasses as the next consumer innovation, yet a surge in negative feedback over privacy and wearability could impede progress. Meta has updated its AI glasses after reports of tampering with recording indicators, while investigations and celebrity criticism add pressure. Snap's AR Specs face design and price concerns, and historical parallels with Google Glass suggest potential industry-wide setbacks.

Several major technology companies are positioning artificial intelligence-powered glasses as the next significant consumer innovation, but a recent escalation in negative consumer feedback—centered on privacy concerns and functional wearability—could undermine these efforts.
Meta recently updated its Meta AI glasses following reports that some users were paying hackers to remove the devices’ recording indicator lights, enabling wearers to record through their glasses without others' knowledge.
This is not Meta’s first encounter with privacy issues related to the recording capabilities of its AI glasses. As reported by Wired, incidents involving “Meta Ray Ban creeps”—individuals recording others without consent or awareness—are increasing, with the camera-equipped glasses feeding hours of content back to Meta’s systems.
In March, U.K. regulators launched an investigation after reports emerged that Meta’s content review contractors were watching intimate footage captured by users through the glasses, including “bathroom visits, sex and other intimate moments,” according to Swedish publication Svenska Dagbladet.
Despite these concerns, Meta has continued to explore even more potentially invasive features. As reported by The Financial Times, Meta is experimenting with a version of the glasses that would record user actions 24/7, potentially without any recording indicators, as part of a procedure to feed user activity into a personalized AI training system.
Meta is also investigating the possibility of adding facial identification into the device, raising further concerns about the glasses being used as surveillance tools.
The growing wave of negative sentiment is now threatening to impact device sales, which have risen significantly since the addition of new Meta AI features. Following the rebranding from Meta Ray Bans to Meta AI glasses, sales more than tripled in 2025. However, as criticism mounts, even celebrities are speaking out against Meta’s glasses.
As reported by national Australian radio station Triple J, pop singer Lorde recently told a crowd at Madrid’s Mad Cool festival that it is becoming harder to know when she is being recorded, due to the rise of AI glasses. “Don’t get the glasses,” Lorde reportedly said. “Not sexy.”
While one musician’s objection may not signal a major shift, it appears to indicate a symbolic turning point against the wearables, which could quickly render them uncool—or worse. Reports suggest that Meta’s glasses are increasingly being referred to as “pervert glasses,” with Engadget reporting that some users are ashamed to wear them in public due to negative reactions.
Then there are Snapchat’s coming AR Specs, which were recently previewed at a launch event. That did not go as well as the company had planned.

It seems unlikely that the expanded functionality of these glasses will outweigh the lack of a “cool” factor. Despite Snap working with various celebrities to promote the offering, market demand may be muted, especially given the $2,000 price tag per pair.
Google learned a similar lesson in 2015, when it discontinued consumer sales of its Google Glass device after just two years. That decision was partly due to hardware limitations and a lack of functionality, but it was also linked to the high price tag of $1,500 and the stigma associated with wearing the glasses in public. The distinctive look of Google Glass quickly lost its novelty and became a source of scorn.
Additionally, Google Glass devices were banned from various venues, including bars, movie theaters, and casinos, due to their recording capacity. Meta’s glasses appear set to face a similar fate, which could restrict their utility.
As reported by syracuse.com, the New York Office of Court Administration has announced it will ban all camera-equipped glasses from all courts starting this month. This is expected to be the first of many jurisdictions to implement similar restrictions.
The combined negative responses and restrictions could sound an early death knell for the entire industry, potentially dashing Meta’s hopes of glasses superseding phones as key connective devices.
Meta has committed heavily to AI, viewing the technology as a transformative shift. However, at this stage, despite proving valuable in certain applications, AI tools have not lived up to the broader hype, particularly in consumer applications where they have not demonstrated exceptional value.
Meta has acknowledged this. In May, Alexandr Wang, Meta’s highest-profile AI recruit and head of its Superintelligence unit, told The Core Memory podcast that while many people have found AI tools somewhat helpful, overall user experiences “are not overwhelmingly better” as a result of AI implementation.
Wang said the onus is on Meta to build more valuable AI tools and win over more users to improve public sentiment. A key component of that effort is Meta’s AI glasses push, which aims to provide users with access to an always-on AI assistant.
Given the increased sales of its AI glasses, that optimism could be well-placed. However, if negative sentiment continues to rise, it could throw a significant wrench in the works.
It does seem that the negative use cases for AI glasses are likely to dominate public perception, despite their potential to overlay information and provide valuable insight. This could slow adoption, and if criticism continues to gain traction, several projects could follow the path of Google Glass.
