Meta has taken another step toward fully automating its support infrastructure, designating its artificial intelligence-powered Developer Assistant as the principal support channel for developers building on Meta's systems.

Developers seeking assistance with Meta's support process will now encounter an AI-driven assistant that, according to the company, is “ready to help you troubleshoot issues, navigate compliance requirements, and get back to building.”

Meta explained the change in an official statement: “Meta AI Developer Assistant is now the primary support path at developers.facebook.com/support. Instead of navigating through multiple pages to find relevant documentation or submitting a support ticket and waiting for a response, you can describe your issue in natural language and get a specific, contextual answer immediately.”

The assistant is integrated with Meta's developer documentation, API references, and platform insights, and is designed to answer specific questions based on systematic knowledge and individual application context.

The shift toward an advanced programming support tool aligns with Meta's growing reliance on AI systems to facilitate engineering work across the organization. Meta has been keen to demonstrate how AI can replace manual processes, using its own operations as a case study. The company cut 20% of its staff this year and replaced numerous positions, including content moderation roles, with AI agents.

In an interview on the Joe Rogan podcast last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company planned to convert human roles into AI-based functions, adding that AI “can effectively be a sort of mid-level engineer that you have at your company that can write code.”

Given Meta's ongoing investment in AI development and its eventual goal of selling AI tools to other companies for workforce optimization, the decision to deploy its own AI systems makes strategic sense. The approach could serve as a live demonstration of AI's potential to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

However, concerns persist about AI's ability to manage functions that have traditionally required human oversight. In June, Meta reported that a “rogue AI agent” inadvertently granted unauthorized access to people's Instagram accounts after some users essentially asked it to do so. More than 20,000 Instagram users had their accounts hijacked as a result, underscoring the risks of giving AI agents full access and control over sensitive operations.

Given AI chatbots' capacity to interpret meaning from conversational queries, such exploits appear inevitable. The virtually unlimited range of ways users can phrase requests makes restricting these tools extremely difficult. Granting support tools increased data access and agentic capability will compound the concern.

Nevertheless, Meta appears committed to addressing vulnerabilities as they emerge while advancing its AI transformation agenda.
