TikTok has announced a landmark partnership with the Walt Disney Company, enabling its users to incorporate Disney characters and scenes into their creative short-form content. The agreement, described by TikTok as a “first-of-its-kind global deal,” will permit the use of approved Disney assets in user-generated videos.

Under the arrangement, Disney will also gain the right to feature select creator-produced clips within its own short-form video feed on Disney+, potentially broadening the reach of creator content. According to a joint press release: “The agreement, which will pilot in the US in the coming months with the intention of other markets to follow, will bring an expansive collection of thoughtfully curated Disney-centric fan-created content from TikTok to the Disney+ app. At launch, short-form videos from participating creators who opt in to the program will live on both TikTok and in Verts on Disney+ and feature characters and stories from across Disney’s brands including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, FX and more.”

The collaboration also introduces a Disney Creator Ambassador Program, designed to recognize top-tier creators with special rewards, increased visibility, access to exclusive events, and career development pathways. The release noted: “This tiered program reflects Disney’s commitment to building relationships with the next generation of creative talent in partnership with TikTok, who has a unique attention and care for its creator community.”

This move represents Disney’s latest effort to stay connected with younger consumers and align with emerging creative and social trends. In December, Disney announced a separate creative partnership with OpenAI, which allowed users of OpenAI’s Sora video generation app to produce videos featuring licensed Disney characters. However, as reported by Variety, Disney terminated that agreement in March after OpenAI revealed it would shelve the Sora platform. The new TikTok deal appears to be a strategic pivot, suggesting Disney has reassessed its partnership options.

Rather than betting on the future of artificial intelligence and the associated IP licensing risks, Disney is now turning to TikTok’s vast creator ecosystem and the platform’s strong appeal among younger audiences to solidify its presence. This approach could prove effective in tapping into next-generation trends, and industry observers will be watching closely to see how Disney leverages this content across its platforms.
