Snapchat Promotes Snapcodes as a New Tool for Brand Marketing
Snapchat recently published an official blog post positioning Snapcodes QR codes as a key marketing tool for advertisers, claiming they offer a more immersive and customizable brand experience than ordinary QR codes. The feature has been available to advertisers since 2017, allowing brands to embed logos, link to AR filters, and enhance analytics within the codes. Despite fluctuating historical usage of QR codes, Snap believes its solution has advantages and provides examples from retail, packaging, and TV advertising.

Snapchat is pitching its Snapcodes QR codes to advertisers as a "key consideration" to drive more immersive and connected promotions and effectively reach potential consumers. The related promotional content has been published on Snap's official business blog.
Snapcodes have been available as an optional feature for advertisers since 2017. With this feature, brands can generate custom scannable QR codes that Snapchat users can scan with their phone cameras to access more brand or product information.
For different target markets, this feature is expected to become an effective tool for driving user engagement, and Snapchat is working to position it as a brand marketing option.
Snap says its Snapcodes can "turn a simple scan into a visually engaging interactive experience," adding that the codes "empower brands to connect with their audiences in new and meaningful ways."
QR codes have historically failed to achieve the widespread adoption that was expected. These scannable markers have been hyped multiple times, but after brief periods of attention, they have often cooled down quickly due to shifting consumer interests.
However, as more users rely on their phones as shopping companions, QR code usage is expected to rebound. Snap claims its QR code solution is superior to other similar products on the market.
Snap stated in its official announcement: "Many QR code generators only offer basic features and often fail to deliver a truly branded and engaging experience. For example, some free online barcode generators have limited customization options, producing codes that look uniform and struggle to attract attention. Users seeking more advanced features typically have to turn to paid services, but even paid services may have limitations in platform integration."
Snapchat further noted that its QR code solution offers more value in this regard: advertisers can customize Snapcodes to match their brand identity, such as placing their brand logo within the code. Additionally, brands can link QR codes to dynamic and engaging content, such as augmented reality (AR) experiences, and access more analytics options to measure code performance.
"Snapchat offers proprietary Snapcodes that are instantly scannable and highly customizable," Snap said. "Unlike ordinary QR codes, Snapcodes enable brands to create visually distinctive codes that reflect their unique identity."
Although it remains questionable whether adding a brand logo to the center of a QR code qualifies as a revolutionary step in "unique" branding, Snap's codes do link back to Snapchat's more advanced advertising experience tools.
Snapchat provided several practical use cases:
- Retail promotions:A clothing brand places Snapcodes on storefront windows, and customers scan them to unlock "try-on" AR filters and discount coupons, driving foot traffic and sales.
- Product packaging:A food company prints Snapcodes on product packaging, and scanning them provides exclusive recipes, nutritional information, or interactive AR games, boosting customer engagement and brand loyalty.
- TV commercials:A streaming service embeds Snapcodes in TV commercials, and viewers scan them to jump directly to trailers or free trial sign-up pages, improving conversion rates and subscriber acquisition efficiency.
Snapchat says this flexibility makes Snapcodes a better choice than existing alternatives and helps drive higher user response.
For marketers, especially brands looking to reach younger audiences through campaigns, this is certainly an option worth considering.
