Meta Launches Muse Image: Allows AI Remixing of Public Instagram Posts
Meta announced the launch of Muse Image, an AI reasoning-based visual creation and remixing tool developed by Superintelligence Labs. The tool allows users to place pets into famous paintings, generate party invitations, and more, and supports use on Instagram and WhatsApp. However, Meta also allows users to AI-remix public Instagram images unless users explicitly opt out. This move has raised questions in the industry about the practicality and authenticity of AI tools, especially in light of Meta's AI head admitting that existing AI experiences are 'not significantly better.'

Amid growing debates over the value and feasibility of artificial intelligence, Meta has announced the launch ofMuse Imagea visual creation and remixing option. The tool was developed by the company's Superintelligence Labs, which focuses on researching and building AI tools.
Muse Image leverages advanced AI reasoning capabilities and is the latest achievement of Superintelligence Labs. Meta has invested billions of dollars in this lab and recruited top talent, while committing hundreds of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure construction to support these "next-generation experiences."
The final product is a series of visual creation tools, with one official use case being "put your pet into a famous painting"—which is indeed a scenario explicitly mentioned in Meta's announcement.
But the question is: does this really make sense?
The background editing in the examples looks quite realistic. However, on platforms like WhatsApp, which are typically used for communicating with friends, why would users want to share images that are not real?
Undeniably, these tools do have some value. For example, using conversational AI editing to polish photos and make them more aesthetically pleasing makes some sense. But completely changing the context of a photo feels fake, misleading, and unnecessary.
Meta's own AI development team seems to acknowledge this. Just last month, Meta Superintelligence head Alexandr Wang stated in an interview on The Core Memory podcast that although many people find AI tools somewhat helpful, overall, the user experience "has not become significantly better due to the introduction of AI." Wang noted that Meta has a responsibility to build more valuable AI tools to win over more users, thereby improving public perception of AI.
However, just one month after that interview, the team led by Wang released this product.
Meta said in the announcement: "The model also provides new creative tools for Meta's apps. You can use over 30 new AI effects in Instagram Stories and generate images in private chats with Meta AI on WhatsApp—initially rolling out in limited countries, with more regions to follow."
Providing Instagram filters does not seem to truly reflect the "more valuable" direction Wang called for.

The entire scene is generated by the AI model. Why would anyone want to generate such content?
There is also a noteworthy detail: "You can @mention Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to bring specific Instagram profiles directly into your images."
According to Wired, Meta added this feature allowing users to remix any public image on Instagram. If users do not want their content to be used for AI generation, they must actively opt out.
Therefore, Meta's new model enables users to create misleading, fake "fun" images and remix other users' content. It is increasingly difficult to see the positive impact in this.
It is worth noting that there is widespread resistance to AI in society today, with critics questioning what value these expensive, environmentally harmful, and potentially job-displacing systems can bring. It is against this backdrop that Meta chose to showcase this "new value point" to ordinary users.
However, if this helps improve Meta's ranking in the WingDings AI competition and surpass other models, that counts as a gain.
