As X platform continues to advance its X Money payment process, TikTok also seems to be considering integrating in-app payments into its expanding e-commerce strategy.
According to Bloomberg, TikTok is exploring the possibility of extending its TikTok Pay feature to users in the United States. If the plan is implemented, US users will be able to transfer funds directly to other user accounts through in-app direct messages (DMs).
TikTok Pay is currently available in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand, allowing users to purchase goods directly within the app. Building on this, TikTok has also launched TikTok PayLater services in some markets, enabling users to pay for purchases in installments.

The ability to make direct payments within the platform could significantly boost in-app purchase conversion rates. Instant payment options are expected to stimulate more impulse purchases, especially in live-streaming scenarios.
This trend has already been validated on China's Douyin platform. According to Walk the Chat, Douyin currently lists Douyin Pay as one of its core in-app transaction options.

According to a report published on ScienceDirect, Douyin live streaming contributed over 40% of its total e-commerce sales in 2024, highlighting the value of supporting direct purchases and associated payment methods during live streams.
TikTok may believe that introducing TikTok Pay could inject new momentum into its e-commerce business in the United States.
The platform has recently observed significant growth in in-app shopping activity. According to the latest report from Momentum Works, TikTok's global GMV in the first half of 2026 is estimated at approximately $50 billion, a year-over-year increase of 92%. Among this, the US market contributed $11.8 billion, with a year-over-year growth of over 100%.
Based on this, it is logical that TikTok wants to simplify the payment process. Given that it has already established mature payment infrastructure in some markets, expanding to the United States is a natural next step.
It is foreseeable that before the official launch, TikTok's US operations may still need to obtain money transfer licenses from various states.
