Specs, the augmented reality hardware development arm of Snapchat’s parent company Snap, has announced a multi-year strategic partnership with Qualcomm. Under the agreement, Qualcomm will supply hardware to power Specs’ upcoming AR glasses, which are scheduled to be launched later this year.

The Specs device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR chipsets—lightweight, high-performance processors widely regarded as among the best options for virtual reality and augmented reality headsets. Snapdragon’s capabilities are specifically designed to enable high-resolution experiences and advanced connectivity with low latency. The same technology is also used to power Meta’s Quest VR headsets and Samsung Galaxy XR units.

This new partnership represents the first strategic agreement for the newly established Specs entity. Snap spun out Specs into its own business in January, creating a level of separation between Snap and its AR hardware operations. That structural move is intended to ensure that Snapchat, the core platform, is not financially tied to the success or failure of the Specs device—an important consideration given the intensifying competition in the AR wearables market.

According to a statement from Specs: “Snapdragon platforms provide the foundation that enables intelligent, context‑aware experiences to run directly on-device, for faster and more private interactions. This strategic initiative builds on both companies’ commitment to making computing more human and more seamlessly integrated into everyday life, transforming the way the world works, learns, and plays together.”

Specs did not provide an official launch date for its AR glasses but reiterated in the announcement that the launch would occur “later this year.”

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in the press release that the partnership with Qualcomm provides a strong foundation for the future of Specs, “bringing developers and consumers advanced technology and performance that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible.”

However, amid rising competition in the AR wearables race, it remains uncertain how Specs will keep pace and establish a market fit against likely better-equipped rivals. Early insight into the coming AR Specs device suggests it will probably be well behind planned AR offerings from Meta and Apple, both of which are far larger companies with substantially more resources to devote to wearables development.

Given these dynamics, Snap likely needs to bring its AR device to market ahead of the competition to gain any meaningful traction. The company is probably counting on Snapchat’s strong alignment with younger audiences, combined with a first-mover approach, to secure a foothold in the wearables space before Meta releases its own AR device.

Still, Snap’s prospects could be limited, which is why spinning off Specs into a separate business may prove to be a critical strategic move. Either way, this new partnership is a positive step toward solidifying its production chain and ensuring it can support its upcoming AR offerings.
