TikTok and Universal Music Group Deepen Alliance with New Multi-Year Licensing Pact
TikTok announced a new multi-year strategic licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG), building on their 2024 partnership. The deal expands creative and commercial opportunities for UMG artists, including ticket sales and merchandise via TikTok Shop, while adding protections against unauthorized AI-generated music. TikTok also highlighted its role in music discovery, citing that 84% of songs reaching the Billboard 200 in 2024 first gained traction on the platform.

As TikTok continues to cement its role as the leading social platform for music discovery, the company has unveiled a new multi-year strategic licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG). The pact, announced via TikTok's official newsroom, ensures that UMG's catalog remains available for use within the app and supports additional music-related features.
According to TikTok, the agreement "builds on the success of the multi-dimensional partnership announced in 2024" and will "further enhance creative and commercial opportunities for UMG's artists and songwriters through expanded marketing and advertising campaigns, as well as access to ecommerce and other artist-centric tools."
Under the expanded terms, UMG artists will gain more avenues to monetize their TikTok presence, including direct promotion of ticket sales and merchandise linked to TikTok Shop. The arrangement also introduces explicit safeguards designed to prevent AI manipulation or misuse of UMG artist content.
In a statement, TikTok emphasized the deal's forward-looking stance on artificial intelligence: "The new deal extends TikTok and UMG's groundbreaking commitment to AI protections that promote human artistry and ensure platform economics effectively flow through to artists and songwriters. TikTok and UMG will work together to remove unauthorized AI-generated music from the platform, while further improving artist and songwriter attribution."
Unauthorized AI-generated music has become a pressing industry concern, as increasingly accessible generation tools allow users to create and share remixes and reimaginings without artist approval. TikTok's collaboration with UMG aims to address this by maintaining robust protections for its artists.
TikTok's significance in music discovery is well-documented. Research cited by the company indicates that U.S. TikTok users are 74% more likely to discover and share new music within the app compared to the average short-form video user. Furthermore, TikTok reported in 2025 that 84% of songs that reached the Billboard 200 chart in 2024 first gained traction on the platform.
Given the measurable value TikTok provides in amplifying new releases and driving listener engagement, the expanded partnership with UMG is a logical step. It promises not only greater promotional reach for UMG's roster but also reinforced safeguards for their creative work in an era of rapid AI advancement.
