Instagram provided the following tips for creators:

  • Have a strong opening line: Only the first two lines of the caption are visible before the “more” call-to-action (CTA). Creators should lead with something compelling—such as a question, a surprising fact, or a teaser—to encourage users to tap “more.”
  • Tell a story: The best captions either share a personal narrative or provide useful information that audiences will want to save or share. Creators should consider whether viewers would screenshot the caption or forward it to a friend.
  • Include a CTA: Explicitly guide the audience on the next step. Instagram suggests: “Invite them to save for later. Direct them to a link in your bio. A strong call to action turns passive viewers into active community members.”
  • Include keywords: Use descriptive, relevant keywords in captions. Instagram search relies on captions as reference data for discovery, so clear, descriptive text helps the system understand the content’s context.
  • Multi-captions for carousels: Consider adding multiple captions to carousel posts to provide richer context. Instagram introduced the option to add a description for each image in a carousel in May.
  • Break up text: Use line breaks, emojis, and short paragraphs to make captions easier to read and scan.
