TikTok is doubling down on the micro-drama space, launching a new program that will provide creators with training on how to write short-form, serialized narratives and uncover the key themes that make these short soap operas go viral.

According to official TikTok news, the writing program, in partnership with the Sundance Institute, aims to "support a new generation of creator-led short-form storytelling for digital audiences."

TikTok added: "This four-week live online course will focus on micro-series scriptwriting, designed to provide creators with the tools, frameworks, and industry guidance to develop serialized, story-driven content."

TikTok said the program will select participants based on their work on TikTok and their interest in micro-drama development.

TikTok noted that the Sundance Institute is known within the industry for supporting emerging talent and helping up-and-coming filmmakers.

The serialized, soap-opera style of micro-dramas is widely popular among TikTok audiences. According to Business Insider earlier this year, the format generated $1.3 billion in revenue for the U.S. market in 2025, primarily from direct payments by viewers.

TikTok has been working to tap into this potential. Last year, it launched the "Minis" section within its app, and in early 2026, it rolled out a dedicated micro-drama app called PineDrama in the U.S. and Brazil.

Nowadays, attention spans are shorter, requiring different storytelling approaches. Perhaps delivering dramatic narratives in two-minute episodes is the next stage of entertainment, with these short series attracting a new generation of consumers through fast-paced, high-drama content.

Therefore, this new TikTok program could be a valuable initiative, while also providing more creative talent with a way to monetize their skills.

Applications for TikTok's micro-drama training are now open globally and can be submitted via the Sundance Institute partner website.
